How We Helped a Patient Avoid Toe Amputation Through Expert Diabetic Foot Wound Care in Nairobi

When dealing with diabetic foot complications, early expert wound care intervention can mean the difference between amputation and healing. At Stanley Wound & Ostomy Care in Nairobi, we’re dedicated to preserving limbs, improving quality of life, and supporting patients through holistic, personalized care.

A Chance Encounter with a Familiar Face

Just yesterday, I had the unexpected pleasure of running into one of my long-time patients. His face lit up when he saw me, and his first words were, “Thank you for saving my limb.”

His story is one that resonates deeply with many diabetic patients in Kenya who struggle with advanced foot wounds.

The Backstory: A Diabetic Foot Wound Headed Toward Amputation

This patient was referred to me by a doctor after being diagnosed with an infected diabetic foot. The initial recommendation was toe amputation, a common but life-altering decision for people with advanced diabetic foot infections.

However, there was a significant complication—this patient had heart failure, a pacemaker, and multiple comorbidities, making him unfit for surgery

That’s when the doctor decided to try a different approach and invited me to assess whether the limb could be saved without surgical intervention.

My Assessment: Signs of Trouble, But Hope Remained

When I examined the foot, I immediately noticed signs of impaired blood supply—a typical red flag in diabetic foot ulcers. However, about 50% blood flow was still present, which meant we had a fighting chance.

To get a clearer picture, I recommended a CT scan to evaluate the extent of infection and assess whether the bones were compromised.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration: The Key to Success

After the scan, we confirmed that the bone was not infected, which was excellent news. At that point, I brought a plastic surgeon on board to evaluate the wound further.

With everyone aligned and the patient stable, we developed a non-surgical wound care plan focused on:

  • Offloading pressure from the wound
  • Advanced moist wound therapy
  • Infection control
  • Blood flow optimization
  • Nutritional and diabetic management

Over time, the patient’s wound healed beautifully.

The Outcome: A Limb Saved, A Life Changed

When I saw the patient yesterday, fully mobile and full of gratitude, I was reminded why wound care is more than just treating the skin—it’s about restoring dignity and preventing disability.

His words—“Thank you for saving my limb”—meant everything.

Why Early Wound Care Matters in Diabetic Foot Management
